Dirty AC Filter Found During San Diego HVAC Service Call

Dirty AC Filter Found During San Diego HVAC Service Call image

Here's something we see all the time on service calls around San Diego - a clogged air filter that's been left in way too long. This 14 x 25 x 2 pleated filter is completely loaded with dust and debris. At that point, it's not filtering anything. It's actually working against your system.

When a filter gets this dirty, your furnace or air handler has to work harder to pull air through it. That extra strain raises your energy bill and puts unnecessary wear on components like the blower motor. Over time, restricted airflow can also cause the system to overheat or freeze up - neither of which is cheap to fix.

We pulled this one out of a utility closet during a routine visit at a residence here in San Diego. The system itself - an AC Pro furnace - was in decent shape. But a neglected filter like this can quietly drag down performance even on a solid unit. A quick swap and the system breathes freely again.

Most manufacturers recommend checking your filter every 30 to 60 days and replacing it at least every 90 days - more often if you have pets or anyone in the home with allergies. San Diego homes that run their AC regularly through the summer burn through filters faster than you'd think. It's a small thing that makes a big difference.

We always check the filter as part of any service visit. It's one of the easiest wins in HVAC maintenance, and it tells us a lot about how the system has been running between visits.
