A failed capacitor is one of the most common reasons an AC unit just stops working. The system hums, struggles to start, or shuts off completely and most homeowners have no idea a small component about the size of a soda can is the culprit. That's exactly what we were dealing with here in Escondido.

The unit needed a 45/5 MFD combination capacitor swap. That rating tells us the capacitor handles two jobs at once starting and running both the compressor and the fan motor. When it starts to fail, those components can't do their jobs properly. The compressor might hard-start, the fan might spin slow, or the whole system just gives up. Left alone, it can kill the compressor and that's a much bigger repair bill.

We opened up the condenser, tested everything with our clamp meter to confirm the capacitor was out of spec, and pulled the old one. The new capacitor went in clean, connections were verified, and we went through the rest of the system to make sure nothing else was stressed from running on a weak cap.

This is the kind of repair that gets overlooked until the system dies on the hottest day of the year. Catching it early or diagnosing it fast when it does fail is the difference between a quick fix and a full compressor replacement. We handle both the outdoor condenser side and the indoor air handler so we're not guessing about where the problem is coming from.
