This call came in as a routine A/C maintenance visit on the downstairs unit but routine visits have a way of turning into something bigger once you start digging. That's exactly what happened here in Carlsbad.

First thing we found was a failed 45/5 combination capacitor. A bad capacitor is one of the most common reasons an A/C unit stops cooling properly. It's a small part, but it carries a big job giving the fan motor and compressor the electrical boost they need to start up. We swapped it out. But when we powered the system back on, the compressor still wasn't starting. That told us there was more going on.

The compressor was struggling to pull enough power on startup, so we installed a hard start assist kit. This device gives the compressor an extra kick of electricity right at startup taking the strain off the motor and helping it fire up reliably. It's a straightforward fix that can extend the life of a compressor that's showing its age. We also found the system was low on R-410A refrigerant, which pointed to a leak somewhere in the system. We recharged it and injected a UV dye and sealant combo. The sealant works to plug small leaks from the inside, and the dye stays in the system so if the leak hasn't fully sealed, a UV light will show us exactly where it's coming from on a future visit. No guarantees the sealant seals every leak but it's the right first step before anything more invasive.

Homes in Carlsbad run their A/C hard. The climate here is mild but consistent enough that systems often run year-round without much of a break. That kind of steady use means parts like capacitors and compressors wear down faster than homeowners expect. A bi-annual maintenance visit, once before summer and once heading into the cooler months, is the best way to catch small issues before they become expensive ones.

Catching a failed capacitor, a struggling compressor, and a refrigerant leak all in one visit is exactly why maintenance calls matter. Left unchecked, any one of those issues could have meant a full system breakdown on the hottest day of the year.
