
A failed capacitor is one of those problems that sneaks up on you. The system looks fine from the outside, but nothing kicks on - no fan, no compressor, no cooling. That's exactly what we ran into on this call in Fallbrook.
The capacitor was reading below its rated limit, which was preventing the outdoor fan and compressor from starting altogether. We swapped it out, got the system back online, and then ran through the full refrigeration system to see what else was going on. While we were in there, we insulated the suction line and taped down some exposed low-voltage wiring that had no business being left open like that.
Here's the honest part though - getting the system running again was step one. There's more work this unit needs. Refrigerant levels are low enough that performance is noticeably affected, and we're recommending a proper preventative maintenance visit along with a recharge. We also flagged the TXV valve as something to keep a close eye on after charging, since the subcool and superheat readings both came in low, which can point to the valve being stuck open.
To track down where the refrigerant is going, we're recommending UV dye and sealant be added to the system. That gives us a way to find a potential leak rather than just topping off refrigerant and hoping for the best. It's a smarter long-term play for the homeowner.
