If you live anywhere from Carlsbad to Vista, you already know the feeling: the marine layer burns off, the afternoon heats up, the AC kicks on, and a few weeks later your SDG&E bill lands with a thud. You're not imagining it. San Diego Gas & Electric has some of the highest residential rates in the country, with a bundled average that climbed to roughly 45.7¢ per kilowatt-hour at the start of 2026. When power costs that much, the single biggest thing you can control is how hard your heating and cooling system has to work.

Here are the questions we hear most from North County homeowners about their bills, along with honest answers about what your HVAC system has to do with them.

How much of my bill is actually heating and cooling?

More than most people expect. Nationally, heating and cooling account for close to half of a typical home's energy use. Everything else (lights, laundry, the fridge, chargers, the TV) splits the rest. So when your bill spikes, the culprit is rarely the toaster. It's the system moving air through your house. That's good news, because it means the biggest line item on your bill is also the one where smart choices pay off the fastest.

Why does running the AC after work cost so much more?

Because SDG&E charges you by the clock, not just by the kilowatt-hour. Most homes are on a time-of-use (TOU) plan, where electricity is most expensive during peak hours, 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., exactly when you get home and crank the thermostat. In summer, peak power can run around 62 to 70¢ per kWh, while overnight “super off-peak” hours can drop to roughly 25¢. Same air conditioner, same house: the price of running it can nearly triple depending on when you hit the switch.

This is the part homeowners are most surprised by, and it's where a smart thermostat earns its keep. A few small timing changes matter more than almost anything else you can do.

I'm on the coast. Do I even need to worry about this?

It depends which side of the hills you're on, and North County has both. Along the coast in Carlsbad Village, Aviara, La Costa, Encinitas, and Oceanside, the marine layer acts like natural air conditioning for much of the year. You might keep the coast at a comfortable 75°F while, on the same afternoon, San Marcos, Vista, and Escondido push into the 90s or triple digits. That inland heat makes AC systems run longer every cycle, wear out faster, and cost noticeably more to operate.

Coastal homes have a different challenge: humidity. Sitting inside that marine layer can push indoor humidity to 65 to 80% for much of the year, which makes a house feel warmer and stickier than the thermostat says, and that often prompts people to cool the house more than they need to. That salt air also quietly corrodes outdoor equipment over time. Different neighborhoods, different bills, different fixes.

My system runs constantly. Is it wasting money?

Quite possibly. Industry testing shows a typical HVAC system delivers only about 57% of its rated capacity into the living space. The other 43% gets lost to leaky ducts, poor airflow, and improper installation. That's air you paid SDG&E to heat or cool, escaping into your attic. An aging, oversized, or poorly installed system doesn't just run longer; it runs harder for less comfort, and your bill absorbs the difference.

The flip side: properly installed, high-efficiency equipment can cut heating and cooling costs by 10 to 30%. On a North County bill, that's real money every month, not a rounding error.

What actually lowers the bill?

A handful of things, roughly in order of effort:

• Beat the 4 p.m. peak. Cool the house to a comfortable temperature before peak hours start, then let the thermostat ease up between 4 and 9 p.m. A programmable or smart thermostat does this automatically.

• Change the filter. A clogged filter chokes airflow and forces the system to run longer. Check it monthly in summer; this one's free.

• Get an annual tune-up. Low refrigerant, dirty coils, and worn parts quietly raise runtime and cost. A seasonal service visit keeps the system running at the efficiency you're paying for.

• Seal the ducts. If nearly half your conditioned air is leaking before it reaches the room, sealing and insulating ductwork is one of the best fixes in the house for the money.

• Consider a whole-house fan (coastal homes especially). Along the coast, a whole-house fan can cool the house on cool evenings for a fraction of AC cost, and inland it can cut AC runtime meaningfully during shoulder seasons.

• Right-size the replacement. When it's time for a new system, a properly sized, high-efficiency heat pump or AC matched to your actual home, not a guess, is where the biggest long-term savings live.

The bottom line for North County homeowners

You can't control SDG&E's rates. You can control how much energy your home needs to stay comfortable, and that comes down to the condition, sizing, and timing of your HVAC system. Whether you're in a foggy Carlsbad bungalow or a sun-baked San Marcos two-story, the path to a lower bill is the same: a system that's clean, sealed, right-sized, and running when power is cheapest.
